WHOLECLOTH BANNERS
Diana Parkes
Diana Parkes, New Zealand ©
The patterned and layered surfaces of the Wholecloth Banners speak of personal journeys, transformation and a dedication to the processes used to achieve them. I avoid designing the work as a finished piece before I start because this would take the excitement out of the journey. It is a process of adding and subtracting, creating layers of colour. I am energized by the search to go further in the technical possibilities of working with dyes and the colour removal techniques (discharge). I thrive on the cutting edge of risk-taking where one slip-up may alter the intended outcome or, at its worst, banish the piece to the failure bin. Interpretation of a WholeCloth banner is left to the individual viewer. My intention is to create intrigue and interest with the complex blending of colours and patterns and to challenge the viewer's perception of what can be achieved with fabric and dyes.
The following are images of the work in my recent exhibition Fibre Reactive, New Work by Diana Parkes, at Expressions, Upper Hutt, November 2009. Click on images to enlarge, then click on NEXT, top right to move to next image.
